Police were able to breathe a sigh of relief after a missing local 17 year old turned up unharmed. Last Tuesday Slave Lake RCMP received a call regarding the 17 year old youth who had not been seen by family for 4 days. Police engaged in an extensive investigation, however the youth returned home some 2 days later following a visit with friends in Desmarais.
A local male is set to appear in court following a theft at a local Sports Bar. On Saturday night Slave Lake RCMP responded to a complaint of a theft from the kitchen area at Jimmy's Sports Bar. A surveillance tape quickly revealed who the suspect was and RCMP were able to arrest the male. He was held in custody until sober and charged with theft.
The 31st Annual Smith Fall fair is happening this weekend. The three day event kicks off today with a Roast Beef Supper at the Smith legion from 5-7. All weekend long the fair hosts a ton of family friendly events, including various animal shows, a trade show , log sawing and nail pounding, A rodeo will be happening on Saturday and Sunday as well at the Trailduster grounds. On Saturday night there will be fireworks at the MD yard between 10 and 11. Sunday is the annual quad rally hosted by the legion at East Fawcett Lake, beginning at 10. Families have the option of enjoying daily events by purchasing a day pass or there is the option of camping on location for a small fee.
Thursday, September 2nd
Police continue to investigate a break and enter at Smith School. Last Monday morning, police were called to the school, it was noted that someone had gained entry through a window in the staff room. RCMP state that there was no further damage inside, nor was anything missing. Several people in the area were questioned regarding the incident but no one in the area claimed to have witnessed anything.
A local female has been arrested and charged following the theft of a vehicle. On Tuesday evening RCMP received a complaint of a stolen vehicle. Later in the night the car was spotted downtown with an intoxicated female sitting in the passenger seat. Police found the keys to the vehicle on the female and arrested and charged her with possession of stolen property. She was held in custody until sober and is expected to appear in Slave Lake provincial court to answer to the charges.
Wednesday, September 1st
Police need the publics help identifying the person responsible for another break and enter in town. Sometime between Saturday night and Monday a 1979, 22 foot Wilderness Camper, which was parked behind a residence in the northwest section of town was broken into. RCMP say once the suspect entered the trailer they took roughly 500$ worth of property. If anyone witnessed anything suspicious in the northwest between Saturday and Monday and think it may be related to this case you are asked to contact the local detachment or call crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Police are reminding motorists to rest up before hitting the roads on a long journey. This reminder comes following a rollover on highway 2. Last Monday police received complaints of a vehicle driving erratically on Highway 2. The vehicle was located and the driver told police he was very tired and assured the members he would rest before proceeding on. Approximately 6 hours later, a complaint was received of a rollover and the driver was found to be the same male. The male advised RCMP he had fallen asleep at the wheel. Police charged the man with Driving without due Care and Attention and issued an offence notice to him.

With students back to school today and this week through the province...RCMP have a friendly reminder for motorists. RCMP and municipal peace officers will be patrolling school zones throughout the school year, and especially this week as everyone gets back into the swing of things. The speed limit in school zones is 30 kilometers per hour. Motorists are also reminded that passing another vehicle travelling in the same direction in school or playground zones is prohibited, and vehicles need to stay well back of school buses that have their lights activated. Serious fines and demerit point’s face the driver caught passing a school bus with flashing lights.
Slave Lake RCMP needs the public’s assistance in finding the person responsible for a theft in the east Mitsue Industrial area. Police say that sometime between the evening of August 12 and the afternoon of the 30th, a white and blue oddwell off road vehicle was broken into in the east Mitsue Industrial Area, approximately 5km north of highway 2 near town. There was roughly 1000$ worth of property taken from the unit. If you witnessed anything suspicious or have any information on this matter Slave Lake RCMP ask that you contact the local detachment or call crime stoppers.
A residence in the southeast was the target of a break in over the weekend and now RCMP are looking to the public for assistance. Sometime overnight on Saturday a residence on 10th avenue southeast was broken into, after someone kicked in the front door. Once inside the unknown suspect helped them self to food and broke a video camera and then left the scene with a small amount of DVD's. Any resident that may live in the southeast and witnessed anything suspicious on Saturday night are asked to contact the local detachment or call crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Slave Lake RCMP are looking for the owner of a silver bicycle. Yesterday police recovered the bike, in fair condition at the McDonald’s parking lot here in town. If you are the owner of the bike police ask that could contact the local detachment at 780-849-3999 or attend the station with proper documentation to prove that this bicycle is in fact yours.
Summer is quickly coming to an end and with that brings new beginnings. Most students at Roland Michener Secondary School will be heading back tomorrow to hit the books. Grade seven students will have a full transition day of school running from 8:45-3:25 and grade 10, 11 and 12 students will also have class. From 11:45-12:45 the school will hold a Barbecue lunch for grade 7 students, staff and parents. Grade 8 and 9 students at Roland Michener head back on Wednesday beginning at 8:45.
A Slave Lake youth is walking away with top honours after competing in Miss Teen Canada Globe. Last night was the big pageant and Karlee Malcolm walked away with a ton of recognition. Malcolm not only placed 1st overall in both the runway and karaoke competition at this Canada wide pageant, she also placed 2nd runner up. The Roland Michener student will now get the opportunity to travel internationally and move on to represent our town, province and country at the Miss Teen Globe pageant.

Slave Lake RCMP continue to investigate following a break and enter in the southeast section of town. Early Saturday morning police received a call from a homeowner who had just returned to find that someone had entered the home and stolen 3 televisions and a Play station 3. Police say there were no signs of forced entry. If anyone witnessed anything suspicious in the southeast late Friday night or early Saturday morning you are asked to contact the local detachment.
A senseless act of vandalisms in the northwest could have done a lot more damage than it did. Last Thursday Slave Lake RCMP were called to the northwest to investigated after they received reports that someone had pulled pins from several 5th wheel mechanisms on a number of logging trucks. Fortunately this was noticed in time and police were able to notify all truck owners and stop a possible disastrous from occurring on the highway. Slave Lake RCMP say this is one of the most senseless acts they have seen as of late considering the damage one of these trucks could have caused coming loose on the highway. Police are looking for answers after an ATM was stolen from the local Golf course. On Monday, August the 16th, Slave Lake RCMP received a call in the morning regarding a missing ATM machine. It appears that the suspects removed a door at the Gilwood Golf and Country Club and then removed the bank machine from the scene. Police ask anyone that may have any information on this suspicious theft to please contact the local detachment or crime stoppers at 1-800-222-tips.
Slave Lake RCMP is looking for the public’s assistance after a large amount of tools were stolen from a work trailer in the Martin River area. Police say that sometime between August 2nd and the 10th someone entered the trailer which was parked at a residence in the Martin River Subdivision, west of town and stole approximately $12,000 worth of hand and power tools. The trailer was a 12 foot, silver enclosed unit with MPJ construction written on the side. Some of the tools taken from the scene include table saw, a Dewalt miter saw, a Dewalt compressor, nail guns and staplers, jig saws and many other hand and power tools. Any one with information on this serious act of theft is asked to contact the local detachment or call crime stoppers to remain anonymous .
The quick action of Slave Lake's fire services and RCMP saw minimal damage after a fire was accidentally set at a residence in town. Last Saturday a small child got a hold of a lit candle and set the porch of his house of fire. Slave Lake RCMP and fire services were able to extinguish the fire quickly. The porch and the exterior wall of the house saw damage.
A local female has a date with court following a heated argument. Last Wednesday a male and female got into a heated argument near a local bar. Police were called when the female reportedly threatened the male with a knife. The woman was arrested and charged with several offences. Police later released her with several conditions and a promise to appear in Slave Lake Provincial Court on September 15.
Police have seized more marijuana in Slave Lake, but this time they have seized full blown plants. Last Thursday, an officer was on another case when he observed several marijuana plants growing in an outside garden at a nearby residence. The observation lead to an investigation and the plants were seized. The police continue to investigate the matter.
Police are looking for the person responsible for a hit and run. Last Friday a truck was damaged in a local hotel parking lot after someone hit it and fled the scene. RCMP are looking to the public for any answers, if you witnessed anything suspicious you are asked to contact the local detachment or crime stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Police are trying to find the owners of a green canoe. Last Wednesday police recovered a green canoe, in good condition in the Canyon Creek area. The owner of the canoe has yet to come forward. If you own this canoe or may know someone who does please contact the local detachment at (780) 849-3999.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate following the death of a 53 year old Wabasca male. At approximately 10:55 pm last Thursday, Slave Lake and Desmarais RCMP were responding to an alleged assault complaint. The Slave Lake RCMP officer was travelling south on Mistassiny Road and was approaching the intersection of Bigstone Cree Road when the driver suddenly observed a pedestrian crossing the road directly in front of him. The member took immediate action and swerved into the northbound lane while also avoiding oncoming traffic. The pedestrian was struck by the police vehicle and thrown into the ditch. First aid was immediately given to the 53 year old male pedestrian and Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene. The pedestrian was transported to Wabasca Hospital where he died a short time later. The investigation has now been handed over to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team. The names of the deceased and the RCMP member are not being released at this time.
Construction will begin immediately on six pump stations for the Nipisi Heavy Crude Pipeline. Pembina Pipeline Corporation has awarded, Alberta based, Willbros Canada, a contract for the construction of the stations which will include site grading, installation of process pumps, the placement of underground drain tanks, concrete work, site fencing and much more. The Nipisi Pipeline will require approximately 190 km of construction as it begins north of Slave Lake and runs south to Judy Creek. From there it will connect to an existing line to deliver product to the Edmonton area. Pembina expects construction to be complete by February of 2011 and the pipeline to be placed into service by the middle of next year.
The Slave Lake Service Canada Centre for Youth has closed its doors for another year. The Centre had a very busy and successful summer, helping a large number of young people in the region with job hunting, resumes, cover letter writing and interview skills. The SCCY also helped countless local employers in the region find enthusiastic students who were ready to work. This year the centre had a number of events designed to connect employers and students, and to promote the benefits of hiring young people over the summer months. Some of the more successful events for SCCY included Hire a Youth Week and Casual Labour Week. The centre will open again next May to assist youth and employers in the region.
Residents are reminded to call RCMP if they see any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood. This reminder comes following an act of vandalism that took place during the early morning of the 4th , a resident in the southwest had their vehicle damaged. Police state that there were several large dents in the vehicle which looked similar to what might occur if the vehicle had been kicked. Police continue to investigate this act of vandalism.
A man wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant was arrested just outside Slave Lake. During the afternoon of the 3rd, RCMP observed two males walking on Highway 2, both appeared to be intoxicated. Police approached the males only to find that one had a Canada Wide Warrant for Suspension of Statutory Release and the other male was on probation and was not allowed to consume alcohol. Both males were arrested, one was transported back to the Remand Center in Edmonton and the other released to appear in Slave Lake Provincial Court.
Police continue to investigate the theft of a dirt bike. On Sunday, a 2000 Yamaha dirt bike was removed from the back of a 1/2 ton truck. Neighbours told police they observed two males taking the bike off the truck and pushing it down a back alley in the southwest. However they did not call the RCMP at that time. RCMP cannot stress enough to the public of Slave Lake the importance of locking your vehicles. This reminder comes following a number of break and enters on the 6th in the southeast part of town. Police say two of the vehicles targeted were parked in the same driveway and once they were entered, numerous items were taken. Police remind the public to lock your doors and remove valuables from your vehicle before heading indoors.
An increase in Coyote sightings has some residence in the southeast portion of Slave Lake a little worried. Coyotes thrive in urban areas where there is abundant green space and food sources such as mice, ground squirrels, and rabbits. Leah Lovequist, a representative with Slave Lake's Sustainable Resource Development, says that coyote sightings this time of year are not uncommon. RCMP are looking for assistance following a string of vandalism that took place on the August long weekend in Canyon Creek. Police say on the evening of the 30th vandals went through the Canyon Creek campground and proceeded to slash tires and electrical cords on RV'S and quads. If you think you may have witnessed anything suspicious on the night of the 30th you are asked to contact the local detachment or call crime stoppers to remain anonymous .
Police are looking for the people responsible for a break and enter on this past weekend. The detachment received a complaint from local business owners in the northwest on Saturday morning regarding two crew truck that had their windows smashed and tools removed from inside the vehicles. The total value of the stolen tools was over 5000$. Police continue to investigate this matter and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to please come forward.
Fire crews from the Lesser Slave area have made their way to BC to assist in fire fighting efforts. One-hundred-and-fifty-five firefighters from Alberta in total are joining the 38 firefighters Alberta has already sent to British Columbia to help battle a number of wildfires burning in that province. The firefighters will work in B.C. for up to three weeks, but can be called back to Alberta sooner if the wildfire situation here changes. This exchange of fire fighting resources is made possible through resource-sharing agreements Alberta has in place with jurisdictions across North America. Alberta is an active participant in these agreements and has benefitted in the past from the assistance received from other fire fighting agencies. Earlier this year Alberta dispatched fire fighting resources to Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.

Police continue to investigate another act of vandalism on a local company. Last Monday, Jaymar Hauling reported that a piece of their equipment had been damaged. The equipment was parked approximately 500 meters north of the railway tracks, adjacent to highway 88. If you know anything about this act of vandalism, please contact Slave Lake RCMP.
Desmarais RCMP have assisted in the safe return of a missing Grande Prairie youth. On Tuesday night the 15 year old was located in the region after being reported missing just over 3 days prior. Gabriela Cervantes, was reported missing on Saturday July 24th by her mother who indicated that the girl was to be home from the movie theatre by 10:00 p.m. on the 23rd after going out with some friends. Police state that there is nothing suspicious nor criminal regarding the teen’s absence and the investigation is closed.
A possible cocaine overdose has caused a local female to face charges. Last Saturday, Slave Lake RCMP was called to a hotel to respond to an overdose, EMS quickly arrived on scene and transported the victim to local hospital. RCMP then searched the room and report finding trace amounts of cocaine. A local female has been charged with possession of a controlled substance. The matter continues to be investigated.
Police are asking the public for assistance after a not so typical break-in that occurred in Westside Village. Last Monday, police received a report of break and enter in a mobile home, inside the trailer court. Whoever broke into the trailer caused extensive damage, by turning and leaving on multiple taps, throwing around property and continuing on my breaking other items. If you saw any suspicious activity near or around unit 73, police ask that you contact them or call crime stoppers to remain anonymous.
Over 1,000 short term construction jobs could be created in this region and other parts of Northern Alberta after the long awaited approval of two pipeline projects. A Pembina pipeline has announced that after two years of waiting, approval has finally been granted for both the Nipisi and Mitsue pipelines. The Nipisi Pipeline, designed to initially transport 100,000 barrels per day of heavy oil, is proposed to begin just north of Slave Lake and run south to Judy Creek. From there it would connect to an existing pipeline system that delivers products to the Edmonton area. The Nipisi Pipeline is designed such that it can ultimately be expanded to a capacity of approximately 200,000 barrels per day. The Mitsue Pipeline is being designed to transport approximately 20,000 barrels per day of condensate from Whitecourt, Alberta to producers operating north of Slave Lake. The approvals to proceed with construction of the pipeline projects were granted by the ERCB without a public hearing, as all stakeholder objections were resolved through the consultation process. The company expects construction to get underway on both projects immediately with the estimated schedule for in-service to get underway in mid-2011.
Construction started later than expected for the expansion of Slave Lake's Fire hall but the completion date is still expected to stay the same. The fire hall expansion project worth $550,000 was originally slated to begin in April but work just began early this month. The project was put on hold after the hall had to wait for a contractor to become available. The new bay will be an additional 2,400 square feet in size to hold a new ladder truck that was purchased by the town for $675,000. It is expected that it will be completed by late fall, early winter.
Police are looking for the person responsible for the assault of a local male. Last Saturday RCMP responded to a complaint after a victim had attended Slave Lake's hospital with a suspected broken jaw. The victim stated that he had been assaulted outside of the local drinking establishment by an unknown male. Police continue to investigate.
**Breaking News- July 21, 10AM**High Prairie will benefit from the Government of Alberta's 2010-13 Health Capital Plan. $90 million will be allocated to the town to build a new health centre which will replace the existing complex and the J.B. Wood Nursing Home. The $90 million includes an increase of $26.2 million to reflect the new estimate for the total cost of the project. The new High Prairie Health Centre will be built on a brand new site and will include a wide range of health services such as acute care, continuing care and community health programs.It is anticipated that construction will get underway on the new facility in Spring 2011 and be completed in Spring 2013.
Residents are being reminded once more to keep vehicles locked at all times. This reminder comes following more break ins during the early morning hours, last Monday. Two vehicles were broken into and each of the vehicles were in the northeast part of town, police report that in each case the vehicles doors were left unlocked.
RCMP are asking for the public assistance following the complaint of a broken window at Slave Lake`s Fire Hall. On July 9th police received the complaint that the window had been broken by a golf ball and upon arrival on the scene several other golf balls were found amongst the grass. Anyone who may have seen someone hitting golf balls in the area, or otherwise engaging in suspicious activity is urged to contact the local detachment or call crimestoppers.
An attempt to stop a shoplifter almost ended badly for a local Slave Lake employee. Last Thursday, an employee at Mark's Work Warehouse noticed a male, accompanied by a female, leaving the store with a pair of work boats. The employee followed the two out of the store and the pair turned around and threatened to stab her if she continued to follow them. The two then fled the scene. RCMP continue to investigate this matter.
Slave Lake RCMP continues to investigate a female in the region who is known to be forging prescriptions at local pharmacies. Police say they are aware of the female’s identity and continue to keep a close eye on this situation.
A missing St. Paul youth has been returned safely following the quick response of Slave Lake RCMP. During the evening of the 8th, police responded to a report of several youth drinking and smoking marijuana at Hilda Eben Park. Upon arrival on the scene the youth quickly fled. Police were able to apprehend a young female who was extremely intoxicated. She was brought back to the detachment and was held overnight due to her extremely intoxicated state and her uncooperative nature. Police learned that the female had in fact been missing from a St. Paul group home do in the morning she was released to Child and Family services.
A local female has been charged with obstruction and possession of stolen property following the theft of multiple tools from a local business. During the afternoon of the 8th, Slave Lake RCMP received information regarding a female selling new tool on Main Street, in Slave Lake. Following the tip, police located two females walking downtown, one of which was found to be in possession of tools, which were still in the original packaging. RCMP questioned the female and she gave a false name and date of birth. Investigation revealed the tools were stolen from Canadian Tire and police quickly identified the female. The suspect was arrested and charged and is set to appear in Slave Lake Provincial Court.
A common-law couple has a date with provincial court following a stabbing in Mitsue. During the early evening of the 8th, RCMP responded to a call in which a male had been stabbed in the face by his common-law spouse. The male was transported to hospital where he was treated for his injuries. The female was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and the male with breaching an undertaking. Police believe alcohol was factor in this incident.
RCMP are looking for assistance from the public following a case of vandalism. Sometime between June 30th and July 14, the windows, mirrors and lights were smashed out of an ATCO Electric picker unit. The unit was parked on an oilfield lease approximately 10 km from highway 88 on the Old Smith Highway. Police state that people commonly off road in the area. McLennan RCMP is looking for a suspect after a case of vandalism. Early Wednesday morning, Police were called to 1st Street West in McLennan where several trees had been found damaged. The trees were planted just over the weekend by local residence to try and beautify the community. Police think the damage occurred sometime overnight on Tuesday. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact McLennan RCMP.
**Breaking News** 10:20 AM July,14 -A 39 year old Slave Lake resident is dead following a car accident. At approximately 5am on Tuesday morning police responded to the roll-over on the Devonshire Beach road, within the Provincial Park. Upon arrival at the scene police stated it was apparent a 39 year old female had been thrown from the vehicle, and was trapped underneath. She was immediately removed from underneath and transported to Slave Lake Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.Investigation revealed there were two people in the vehicle at the time of the accident and the second person had already left the scene. The second person, a 16 year old youth, from Slave Lake, was located some time later at a local residence, and was taken to the hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. This investigation is ongoing, with the services of a Criminal Crash Investigation Team, as well as a Collision Analyst being utilized. It is currently unknown who was in fact driving the vehicle, or what caused the vehicle to roll over on the road.
The identity of the deceased, a 39 year old female, resident of Slave Lake, is not being released at this time at the request of the family.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance following the theft of a Wheatheart Post Pounder. Last Thursday police received the complaint that the post pounder had been taken from the yard of Enterprise Energy. It is suspected the theft happened during the previous night, when the suspects hooked up to the trailer and drove off. Both the post pounder and trailer are red in colour. If anyone has any details on this theft you are asked to contact the local detachment or call crime stoppers at 1-800-222-Tips.

The first involved a victim that had left the window open to their vehicle in the 7-11 parking lot. Upon return to the vehicle two wallets were missing. The second incident occurred in the southeast quadrant of town, where an Ipod was taken from an unlocked vehicle. The thieves also rifled through the glove box of this vehicle. You are not only reminded to lock vehicles at all times, but also to keep valuables out of site when a vehicle is unattended.
**BREAKING NEWS** 12:15pm June 29th- A 13 year old Slave Lake resident is recovering in hospital following an accident last night. At approximately 7:50pm the 13 year old girl was struck well crossing at the intersection of 6th Avenue SW and 3rd Street SW. Police reports indicate the girl was in the cross walk when she was struck by the vehicle which was traveling west on 6th Avenue. The pedestrian, received serious, but non life-threatening injuries, and was transported via ambulance to Slave Lake's Hospital where she was then transferred via air ambulance to the University Hospital in Edmonton. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and all indications from witnesses on the scene suggest speed did not play a factor either. Police reports indicate that sun was a factor, with members arriving on scene noting the extreme glare caused by the low setting sun. The matter continues to be investigated.
